At YaLa, we believe in the power of Citizen Journalism and social media. They let everyday people share their voices and stories — something once possible only through major media outlets.
That's why we built the Citizen Journalism Program: to give you the tools to tell your story and advocate for your cause with accuracy, care, and impact. Together, we can drive meaningful change.
YaLa invites you to apply for a 3-month online training combining practical citizen journalism tools, cross-cultural connections, meaningful discussions, and storytelling skills — alongside young people from across the region.

Every Tuesday, for 12 weeks
An exclusive video lesson
From working journalists and trainers at AP, Al Jazeera, The New York Times, CNN, National Geographic, and more.
A live Zoom session with the YaLa team
One hour, 7–8 PM Jerusalem time — discussion, practical activities, and space to put what you learned into practice with peers across the region.
Your final project
An article, podcast, or video documentary — with guidance from YaLa on how to publish and promote it on your chosen platform.

The strongest final pieces are published on YaLa Press for a regional audience.

Eligibility
Ages 17–36
Open to young people from Palestine, Israel, and other countries across the Middle East and North Africa.
Language
English
All video lessons, live sessions, and coursework are conducted in English.
Commitment
Certificate on completion
Attend at least 80% of sessions, participate actively, and complete every assigned task to earn your certificate.

Shortlisted candidates are invited to a 30-minute conversation with the YaLa Academy team.

Common questions
Before You Apply
Do I need prior journalism or media experience?
No. The program is built to teach you from the ground up — curiosity and commitment matter far more than a background in media.
Do I need a camera, microphone, or editing software?
No special equipment required — a phone is enough to participate and complete your final project.
Are the live Zoom sessions recorded if I miss one?
No. Sessions aren't recorded, in order to protect the privacy of participants.
Can I apply if English isn't my first language?
Yes — for most participants, English is a second language. As long as you can follow along and communicate, you're welcome to apply.
How many participants are accepted each semester?
Around 30–35 participants are accepted per semester.
What happens after I complete the program?
Graduates who meet the attendance and task requirements earn a certificate — and are invited to join YaLa+, our alumni network, where CJ graduates from every semester stay connected, keep collaborating, and continue growing with the wider YaLa community.
